Home Made Halloween Costumes - Get Started Now!

Moms are busy and mine was no exception. When I was growing up, my mother always waited until the last minute to get us something to wear for Halloween. That is when I discovered how much fun home made Halloween costumes could be.

Leaving our Halloween costumes up to Mom usually meant picking out some last minute Halloween costume.

Usually it would be a cheap plastic costume from the local drugstore and going with that.

Though this was okay for quick costume ideas, it was not ideal.

When my brother was in second grade, he had to dress up for school.

My mother had no time to help him with a costume, as she had a newborn, so I took over making costumes with impressive results. Honestly, I think that is what launched my desire to design movie costumes.

Though having a boy dress up as a girl is probably a pretty common idea for home made Halloween costumes today, it was not quite as common when we were kids – especially in our small Texas town. Actually, it is kind of funny when I look back.

I took what I could find in my room to make him into a very convincing looking little girl. Because he was only eight years old at the time, the only thing that I had a problem with was his hair.

He was sporting a shaved look and I did not have a girl hair wig for him to wear. I had plenty of everything else to make Halloween costumes.

He looked so funny that our cranky school bus driver, whom we had never seen smile before, cracked up with laughter the moment he saw my brother.

It's pretty easy once you come up with homemade Halloween costume ideas to make your own. You can usually find things around your house to create them.

Of course, you can fill in what you do not have through a variety of sources.

Thrift stores are always great for things like prom dresses, wedding dresses, and even suits that won’t cost you a fortune. You can also find things in craft stores too.

Though this was not the case when I was a child, now the biggest variety of fun Halloween stuff to go with your home made Halloween costumes, can be found on the Web.

Just remember to order early as more and more people are starting to shop at online costume stores.

You also want to get started early if you think the costume that you want to make is going to be extremely complicated. You want to have time to mess up and start again, which is what is going to happen.

If you sew, there are many Halloween costumes patterns you can get to help you whip up a getup. They are pretty inexpensive.

Remember, you are starting from scratch with some of your home made Halloween costumes, and you don’t want to be left with nothing if you start too late and cannot get it right.  That means you will be heading to the local drugstore for a last minute Halloween costume, or some cheap Halloween costumes. You can do better than that!
