Creative Halloween Costumes: Ideas for Your Most Creative Halloween Costumes Ever

Creative Halloween CostumeIt's not hard coming up with ideas for creative Halloween costumes if you are willing to use your imagination and think outside-the-box. It's understandable if you don't want to go with one of the typical Halloween costume ideas, such as a ghost, mummy, witch or vampire.

Even something more recent like a sexy nurse costume or fireman costume are all kind of played out, though it should be said, these classics never really go out of style. A good vampire costume or ghoul will still win you accolades if done well.

That said... it's the creative Halloween costumes that usually win the most praise.

Halloween these days is less about spooky stories and more about coming up with a costume that best expresses your individuality.

For some that means a modern take on classic Halloween costume ideas, but for others that means going in a new direction entirely.

For example, a few years ago I was at a Halloween party where one of the partygoers dressed up as "Postmodernism." That's not a person or a place, or something you can even have a mental image of - it's an abstract intellectual theory. Pretty clever Halloween costumes and certainly interesting.

I was blown away at the creativity of the idea. This was someone who'd really taken the time and the effort to come up with Halloween costume ideas that were unique and completely original halloween costumes.

Postmodernism was something he could play around with, creating his own illusion of what the idea meant and therefore what his costume should be.

Kind of made it a cinch to be a good Halloween costume with little effort, once the wall of creative thought and breaking through the barriers of convention was knocked down.

You can apply the same type of thinking to your getup this year. Maybe rather than going as a critical movement, you can go as an artistic movement like Picasso's "Blue Period" or something else entirely. With a little imagination, there is a world of Halloween costume ideas out there for you to discover.

Creative Halloween Costumes: How to Make an Easy Halloween Costume

Would you like to make your own creative Halloween costume but just don’t know where to start? Perhaps I can help you. Over the years I’ve pulled together some terrific Halloween costumes and found getting Halloween costume ideas is a lot easier than one may think. Here is how I put together totally original Halloween costumes that are distinctively different each and every year.

As soon as those seasonal Halloween only stores open, I am there! You know, those costume shops that are always hard to find because they are not normally there? I go not so much to buy a full Halloween costume, but to harvest bits and pieces for my own unique costume.

Typically, those stores have limited choices and cheap costumes. That is not what we want anyway. However, they do carry fake blood, scars, fake tattoos, fangs, and costumes accessories that I may need for my creative Halloween costume.

I confess, I still like to go through Halloween stuff at stores in town before shopping online. Simply because it can be a fun outing rummaging through the bins and discovering your costume.

While many people will have a detailed vision of what they want their Halloween costumes to look like, I tend to create around the cool things I find. If there is an outrageous costume wig or wild eyes that grab my attention, I use that for the basis of my Halloween outfit.

Next stop is the local thrift shop or vintage clothing store. There is always some funky clothes there that will work for my costume. With all of the dated clothing, oversize coats, old shoes, feather boas, hats, gloves and more, you should be able to find a perfect outfit for your Halloweencostumes.

On Halloween night, I go heavy on the makeup, add a few finishing touches such as spray on B Wild Hair And Body Glitter and I am done. Believe me, it is that easy and fun. Once you make your own creative Halloween costumes, you will probably not buy costumes straight off the shelves again.

More Creative Halloween Costumes Ideas

A good beginning to truly creative Halloween costumes is to go a local costume shop. Take a look at the lineup. See what's most popular then vow to do something else! It's no fun when you show up to find five others in the same costume as yours.

Your visit to the costume stores should have filled your eyes and senses with the more usual themes. Your mission is to take it all a step further, going where no Halloween night devotee has gone before.

In the privacy of your own room, mentally review your favorite childhood story book characters. Did you like Grimm's? The Wind in the Willows? Merlin is a fascinating character.

Did you always wish you were one of the Three Musketeers? Historical, legendary and romantic figures you admire or, are afraid of are good candidates in your quest for the creative Halloween costume par excellence. Everyone has a fantasy character they're stuck on, so let yours come alive.

Jewelry, belts, sashes, capes, trims and hats are what we're talking here.

Click your way to some of the online dance and theatre supply stores for some of the most fabulous accessories at a good price. These shops carry extensive lines of makeup and special effects products. What if you were a work of wax? You can be. Body paint can work creative miracles.

Don't underestimate the mask in your masquerading! Paper mache masks are easy to make and rank high on the creative scale. There are online tutorials for this project.

How might you portray an evil gingerbread man? Find clever Halloween costumes twist to a classic. Take the classic Mummy to new heights, with blood-soaked cloth wrappings, stitches in unimaginable places and cobwebs adorning it all.

Here's a simple but unique Halloween costume idea. All you need is a cardboard box, paint, and a spooky sound tape that you activate at your pleasure. You're a walking haunted house!

Be the creature or princess of your dreams. There really is no limit to creative Halloween costumes.
